Reading picture books with your preschooler is a fantastic way to unwind and settle everyone down. It’s also an excellent way to build literacy and verbal skills. We use this delightful list of letter L books for preschool to practice the shape and sound of L during storytime.

Picture Books About Lions

These books are the perfect introduction to our Uppercase Letter L craft where students transform the letter L into a lion. Of course, you can also read these books without any crafts because storytime is awesome!

The Lion and the Mouse by Jerry Pinkney. Mr. Pinkney is an artist and creates the best wordless books. In this beautifully-illustrated wordless book, we watch the classic tale of a lion and a mouse come to life.

Andy and the Lion by James Daugherty. A re-write of the ancient classic Androcles and the Lion in modern language and a fun approach. While walking home from school, Andy meets a lion in need of help.

The Happy Lion by Louise Fatio. The people who come to the zoo love to see the happy lion and spoil him with food. But when he realizes his door is open one day and decides to return the favor why is everyone terrified?

The Lion and the Little Red Bird by Elise Kleven. Two unlikely characters become fast friends.

Tawny Scrawny Lion by Kathryn Jackson. Poor lion can’t catch anything to eat until finally the animals teach him to make carrot stew. A Little Golden Book classic.

If I Were a Lion by Sara Weeks. If you were in a chair in time out, what would you think about as you sat? Apparently, roaring at your mom! The prose in this book is delightful.

Picture Books about Ladybugs

Use these books to introduce our lowercase letter L craft for your preschooler to transform the letter l into a ladybug. Ladybugs are so much for preschool kids! If you want to take your child ladybug hunting in the Spring look for a patch of weeds or on the trunk of a tree. When you find a gathering of ladybugs your preschooler might just sit and play for hours!

Ladybugs by Gail Gibbons. In her classic style, Ms. Gibbons shares facts and details about ladybugs you never knew. If the book has too many words, you can read the first sentence of each page to get a good overview and keep it simple.

The Grouchy Ladybug by Eric Carle. Mr. Carle does incredible collage work and this book is worth the time just to see his ladybug. Also, because kids are often grouchy they can totally relate.

Letter L Books for Preschool about the Outdoors

Leaf Jumpers by Leslie Evans. If you are studying the letter L in the Fall you will definitely want to get this book. And then go jump in leaves.

Lost in the Woods a Photographic Fantasy by Carl R. Sams II. The photography in these books is stunning, and the story line intrigues us every time.

The Listening Walk by Paul Showers illustrated by Aliki. Encourage listening with this simple idea and then get your kids moving when you go on a listening walk together after you read.

Miscellaneous Letter L Books for Preschool

The Little House By Virginia Lee Burton. An old, little house is being dwarfed by skyscrapers in the big city. What will become of it.

The Little Engine that Could by Watty Piper. I think I Can, I think I can. And he did. And your kids can too! I love this little book about a little engine.

Let’s Eat by Ana Zamorano. When eating nutritiously is a struggle, picture books can help! This picture book shares a delightful family meal time.

More Advanced Letter L Picture Books

Linnea in Monet’s Garden by Christina Bjork. A more advanced book, this ingenious picture book showcases Monet’s art and his gardens come to life in the illustrations too.

Abe Lincoln Goes to Washington by Cheryl Harness. Also more advanced, but kids get the first glimpse of an incredible president and hero.
