Uppercase Letter D Craft – Duck

Sharing is caring!

If you’ve already checked out the Letter D Book List, you know that we have quite a few duck books for you to read this week. Ducks are such a fun theme! We’re tapping into that with this week’s uppercase letter d craft and making a super cute duck.

Cutting and pasting are so valuable for preschool kids! If you’ve been following along with us doing the alphabet crafts and letting your child do most of the work, you’ve probably already noticed an improvement in your child’s skill level with cutting and pasting. Don’t worry – none of these projects are supposed to be perfect.

Are you struggling to get your child to do crafts? That’s okay! Not all kids love craft time, but the value for building fine motor skills cannot be beat. Here are a few ways you can make craft time more palatable for reluctant kids.

  • Spend time crafting at the same time each day. It doesn’t always have to be formal, but kids love routine. So if you can set them at the table with scissors and paper every day for thirty minutes, they will get used to the activity and come to expect it.
  • Keep it low key and stop or take breaks if your child becomes overwhelmed.
  • Accommodate sensory issues without complaint or added stress. Sometimes the sensory stimulation of craft time is very stressful. If your child wants to wash their hands extra during the process, let them.
  • Practice crafting skills. Some kids are just scared to do an activity because they don’t know how and it scares them. Give your kids scissor activities with no craft involved and let them practice. Give them a glue stick and let them make whatever they want.
  • It’s okay to walk away from a crafting activity for your own sanity. Don’t stress.
  • Make any craft easier by using stickers. Not ready to glue pieces down and make the cute duck? Your child can cover the letter d with donut or duck stickers instead. Definitely get the sticky google eyes.
  • Praise your child often for hard work. I know I’ve mentioned that before, but it bears repeating.
  • Emphasize the process and not the end result. Make sure your child knows it does not have to be perfect. In other words, don’t talk about how beautiful it is – talk about how hard they worked to finish it.

Here’s what you need to make your cute duck Uppercase Letter D Craft.

  • yellow construction paper
  • orange construction paper
  • construction paper in the color of choice for background
  • googly eyes
  • glue
  • scissors
  • alternative – white paper and crayons

I don’t know how many times I’ve strapped the baby into the high chair, called everyone to the table, and then realized I can’t find any of the kid’s scissors. That’s how I learned this pro tip: Before you call your kids in for craftwork, set up your area for the craft. Gather all of the supplies. Children have such a short attention span, it really helps if you can dive right in to your activity once you have their attention.

Another pro tip: You can never have too many pairs of kids scissors. Buy several pairs when the back-to-school stuff goes on clearance.

If you want to talk about the letter sound before you start crafting, gather up a few toys that start with d from the playroom when you gather supplies. Some examples you might have are dinosaurs, dogs, ducks, and diggers. Lay these out on the table and talk about each one before the craft.

Steps to make the Uppercase Letter D Craft

  1. Cut out a large uppercase D and 1 wing from the yellow paper.
  2. Next, cut out 2 feet and a beak from the orange paper.
  3. Then glue down the D in the middle of the paper.
  4. Next glue down the wing on the left side of the D.
  5. Then glue down the ducks beak on the right side of the D.
  6. Next glue down the 2 feet on the bottom of the D
  7. Finally glue down the 2 googly eyes on the top of the D.

Isn’t this uppercase letter d craft adorable? I love how great the duck turned out and I know it will be proudly displayed in your home.

Pro tip: Don’t forget to take pictures so you can make an alphabet book with your child’s creations! (Plus that way you don’t have to leave them hanging on the wall until they start to rot.)
