Uppercase Letter K Craft for Preschool

Sharing is caring!

The world loves royalty, doesn’t it? I mean, all I have to do is spend five minutes scrolling FB videos to realize that we are obsessed with the lives of royals. Kings and Queens captivate our imagination. Little kids love to play “king and queen” too, so use that to your advantage as the perfect segue for learning. In this uppercase letter K craft for preschool, your student will transform the letter K into a handsome king.

Royal Frame of Mind

For kids, it’s fun if you introduce the letter craft with one or two different activities to put everyone in a royal frame of mind. These are my favorites.

Royal Toys I Love if You Have a Budget for Thematic Play

Thematic play is really powerful to get kids engaged with the learning process. I love organizing our days and weeks by theme! Pretend play is also just really good for kids, so if you can pick up a few of these things either in stores or at yard sales, that’s a good idea.

Other Royal Extension Activities because K is for King

Extension activities take the theme you are using for one subject and spread it out into other subject areas to “extend” the learning.

  • Have your student make up a play about a king and queen or a king and his dog and act it out.
  • Show your student how to write the word king.
  • Have your student tell a story about a king.
  • When you read a book about a king, have your child point to the word every time it appears in the book or raise their hand every time they hear you say the word.
  • Have your student write a letter to a king, real or imaginary.
  • Have your student watch a video about a famous king from history.

Materials for the Uppercase Letter K Craft

The uppercase letter k craft has a longish list of supplies. The key things to think about ahead of time are sequins or jewels and chenille stems. The other supplies are ones you probably already have from previous letter crafts. Pull out all of the supplies ahead of time and go ahead and draw the cut pieces onto construction paper so your child can do the cutting on his or her own. Also, if you happen to have a King Puppet bring him to the table to have some fun!

Instructions for the Uppercase Letter K Craft

While your student is working on the craft, talk about some things that begin with the K sound. Don’t stress if the items actually start with c, because awareness of that difference will come later. The key is to associate the right sound with the letter for now.

Cut pieces for the uppercase letter K craft.
  1. Trace the cut pieces shown above on the construction paper with a thick marker so your child will be able to follow the lines. Then have your student follow these directions.
  2. Cut out a large uppercase K from the blue paper.
  3. Next, cut out a crown from the yellow paper.
  4. Then cut out 2 large circles from the white paper for the eyes and 2 smaller circles from the black paper for the inner eyes.
  5. Next, glue down the K in the middle of the paper.
  6. Then glue down the crown on the top of the K
  7. Next, decorate the crown with sequins or jewels.  If you don’t have sequins or jewels have your learner decorate the crown with a crayon/marker.
  8. Then glue down the 2 white eyes with the black inner eyes inside.
  9. Next, curl the pipe cleaner into a mustache and tape down just under the eyes.
  10. Then glue down the pompom or cotton wool on top of the mustache for a nose.
  11. Finally, draw a smile on your king with the red marker/crayon.
