Sharing is caring!

When it’s time to learn the letter T, give your child a visual image they won’t soon forget with our uppercase letter T craft for preschool. These letter crafts help students form a picture in their minds for each letter, which follows the highly successful method of Orton-Gillingham for teaching students to read. Learning the letters is the first step in the process.

Whether this is your child’s first crack at learning the alphabet or you’re reviewing letters for the second or third time in preschool, you can lay an excellent foundation for reading. I’ve put together several different ideas to help you teach the Letter T and its sound.

Use as many ideas as you like and can fit into your week without stress. The more variety you use in your approach, the more effective your teaching will be. While you’re learning together, make sure to make the lowercase letter T craft this week too. You’ll find even more ideas for teaching the letter T in that post.

As you complete each of these activities, don’t forget to have your student do the following activities each time.

  • Trace the letter T on the book, on the craft page, or in the air.
  • Repeat the sound of the letter t several times
  • Emphasize the sound at the beginning of keywords that start with T.
  • Write the letter t on a large chalkboard or whiteboard to incorporate large muscle movement. You can also write the letter T outside with sidewalk chalk or trace the letter in the sand.

Play with Educational Tiger Toys

Any educational toys that begin with the letter T will work well, but for this post we will focus on tiger-themed toys. Many libraries offer some of these toys as library loans just like books so be sure to check. Libraries especially like to offer puppets, puzzles and train sets in our experience! Here are some fabulous tiger toys that teach for the letter T.

  • Tiger Puppet. Playing with puppets can help increase a student’s creativity, quick-thinking, problem-solving, and storytelling skills.
  • Tiger Floor Puzzle. Floor puzzles improve gross motor skills, problem-solving skills, and executive functioning (planning and preparation).
  • Tiger Costume. Costumes help students put themselves in different roles and experience the world in different ways. This is called rolled play and is a very important learning tool for young children as they explore the world for the first time.
  • Small Plastic Tiger Family. Plastic animals are a favorite toy at our house and increase creativity and pretend play as well as story-telling. And as a bonus, plastic animals encourage grasping and develop fine motor skills in a totally fun way.
  • Tiger Coloring Pages. Coloring pages improve fine motor skills and develop the pincer grasp. Use triangle-shaped crayons or markers to encourage the correct grasp.
