Lowercase Letter Y Craft for Preschool

Sharing is caring!

Do you remember making yarn crafts as a child? The stringy texture is so satisfying to craft with when you are in preschool. In this Lowercase Letter Y Craft, yarn is used to decorate the letter Y as you practice the sound and shape of the letter.

As you make this craft, don’t forget to review the sound of Y several times and have your child practice the sound and name of the letter. Y can be a little confusing because the sound of the “name” has the w sound at the beginning like “why”, but the sound of the letter is completely different.

Different Ways to Practice the Letter Shape

  • Besides this craft, you can review the lowercase shape of y in different ways. If you have a chalkboard, draw it really large and have your child erase it with a damp cloth. The same idea works on a whiteboard, whiteboard marker, and dry cloth.
  • You can also use a wet sponge to “write” the letter outside on your back patio or deck using water.
  • If you don’t have a sponge, your child can dip a paintbrush in water and “paint” the letter. This is a non-messy way to involve large muscle groups in letter practice.
  • Another great activity is to create the letter using found objects from nature. Show your child how to gather sticks, stones, leaves, or dandelions and create the letter Y on the ground.
  • Of course, you can also use sidewalk chalk, sidewalk paint, or window chalk if you don’t mind the slight mess.
  • Review the letter shape using books! Our list of Letter Y Books for preschoolers has a couple of picture books that feature yarn, but it is also chock full of different keywords that begin with Y. As you read each book, emphasize the sound of the letter Y at the beginning of words and also draw attention to the letter on the pages of the book.

Identify the Letter Y Sound

  • It’s a slightly different skill to find items that begin with the letter Y around your home. It’s the application of knowledge learned.
  • Ask your child to look around each room and try to find things that begin with the Y sound. Items you might find include yellow, yarn, yogurt, a yoyo.
  • If you don’t have much in your home that starts with the Y sound, try hiding paper squares with the letter Y written on them for your child to find.
  • Another great idea would be to grab some old magazines or extra letter Y worksheets, cut out the images, and put those on cards for hide-and-seek.
  • Search for yellow items. Yellow is a great Y word, so practice saying that word over and over by finding different things around your home or outside that are yellow. You don’t even have to do this all at once, you can spread it out over several days and just point out yellow things as you see them. Our letter Y picture book list has a couple of great books for yellow.
  • Try yoga! Yoga is a great letter Y word for kids. I love this kid’s yoga site for great ideas.
